Colored Asphalt Pavement Coatings by Seal And Coat

Colored acrylic asphalt coatings are a great way to create a unique look for your driveways, walkways and parking lots. These acrylic coatings provide a custom, one of a kind look not offered by conventional black pavement sealers. Typical coal-tar based sealers their color from the black coal-tar particles. In contrast, colored acrylic based asphalt coatings are neutral in color and get their color from a highly concentrated, water based pigment dispersion designed as a colorant added to the neutral base.

The unfortunate downside to colored asphalt coatings, is they can't be applied on pavement previously sealed with coal tar or asphalt based sealers. This means we can't apply these products unless your pavement is brand new, has never been sealed, or has been sealed a long time ago and the sealer has completely worn off. They can also cost more, due to the complexity of the product and the application process. And finally, these products may not last as long, especially on high-traffic locations. Due to the higher cost of the materials, it is most economical to use colored acrylic asphalt coatings on walkways, cross walks and home driveways. Large parking lots should use our standard, ultra-high premium black coal-tar based sealers as discussed in our Asphalt Seal Coating section, since the cost of colored coatings are do not make them an economical choice for large scale projects.

Colored coatings are also more complex to apply than standard sealers. It is recommended to apply colored pavement coatings in two coats for optimum performance. After the coating has dried, a clear protective topcoat is recommended to further protect the pavement, and the coating, against the suns UV rays, snow, water, oil, fuel and other environmental and chemical assailants.
